Hello everyone, and welcome to the first editor’s blog. I’m Matt, editor and founder here at Between Worlds, and it’s my pleasure to be able to bring you the first of many editor’s blog posts! I’ll be using this space to talk about submissions, fiction, and the direction of Between Worlds in general. However, this entry will be a little more important than most. In the course of receiving our first submissions, it came to our attention that we need to reconsider our parameters to allow for a greater range of stories.
Going forward, we are dropping the Young Adult and New Adult requirements for submissions. Submissions will now be open to all protagonist ages and target audiences, so long as they include an element of transition between worlds and realities.
Worlds Beyond Our Own
We love speculative fiction here at Between Worlds, and wish we could publish spec-fic of all genres. However, we particularly love the idea of the worlds beyond our own, whether they are fantastical, horrific, scientific or a melding of genres. Some of our favourite stories fall into this category – the horrors of Stephen King’s The Mist, for example, where science tears open a hole in reality and the world is decimated by the things that come through, or the world jumping of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, with worlds both similar to our own or vastly different and alien.
Alternate worlds come in many forms, and that’s why we love the idea. They provide endless fodder for stories – what happens when we travel there, or what happens when they invade our own? How do we cope?
We hope that explains a little about what we’re after, and hope that widening the submissions to all ages allows your story a place in Between Worlds.
We’ve now accepted our first story, and are working through the rest of our submissions now. If you’ve submitted, you should expect replies in the coming weeks. If you haven’t yet submitted, we sincerely hope that you’ll have a look at our relevant page and send your story our way for consideration. If you have any further suggestions as to how to improve things on the magazine, please don’t hesitate to send them our way at email@example.com.
Until next time, it’s been a pleasure having you.
